August 8th (Beaubien 2nd Day)

It was nice to sleep until 7:15 PM this morning because we didn’t have to break camp and hike somewhere else. We ate a quick breakfast and then we left to go down to the horse corral. They only had enough horses for 6 of us to go, so the rest of us decided to hike to the commissary, because we were out of food!

Matthew’s horse was named “Baby Boulder “, and he was the most hyper of the crew.  Carter’s horse, Jeremiah, was the slowest.  Mike Bodden thought his horse was awesome . They departed for a 90 minutes horseback ride.

Ray, MikeH, Adam, Dave, John and myself all hiked down to the Phillip’s Junction commissary, which was a fairly easy one mile downhill hike. When we got there Mr. Harrington tried to call home . Our packs were empty, because we had to fill them with food.  I bought some postcards at the commissary, along with stamps. I wrote home and mailed it out. MikeH bought all of us freeze-dried ice cream, and there was also fresh fruit for free, so I ate an orange.  He hiked back (uphill, packs full!) and met our guys for lunch.  They all had a great time horseback riding, except Ryan fell off his horse at the end (he was OK).  I had my hiking hat branded with the Philmont brand.

We wanted to hike Trail Peak after lunch, but the weather started worsening, with the usual 2PM thunder and lightning approaching. A lot of people practiced roping . Spencer had trouble with his steer . Ryan roped like a pro.  We really wanted to see the airplane wing at the top of Trail Peak, but it looked like we weren’t going to make it, so Ray and I decided to ride some horses, while the rest of the scouts played horseshoes and practiced roping. My horse’s name was Colby.  I enjoyed the ride, but I started to feel fatighed and sick again, with my a sore throat, probably from all the wet and rain.  When we got back, Matthew and I tried to start a fire, but everything was too wet. I went to bed to try and clear up my itchy throat and fight fatigue.

MattG and MikeB went down to help cook the ChuckWagon dinner we were going to have tonight at 6PM. The food was delicious. Beef stew, biscuits, and all the gatorade you can drink.  We also had Peach Cobbler cooked in our own pot.  After the ChuckWagon we had another 8PM show, this time in front of a HUGE outdoor campfire.

Spencer volunteered for the joke contest, but found out it was an Irish Jig Dancing contest instead!  He was incredible, and received the most applause, but was ROBBED of victory when they felt sorry for a dancer that nobody clapped for!!!

The show ended at 9:30, and I crawled into my tent with an aching throat and fell asleep immediately.
